Squeaky Clean Burgers

The food industry has many dirty little secrets. Things they don't share with us consumers and things some of the us simply don't want to know because to know means we must make a conscious decision and well, who has time for that?

Food Inc has brought a lot of facts about our "food" to the public. Beef is a prime example.

The NY Times recent article, Safety of Beef Processing Is Questioned, about the very beef fed to our children in schools and fast food chains exposed a dirty little secret and has awakened some consumers. Yes, they inject beef we eat with floor cleaner.

But let's not get our panties in a bunch, you know, it's all for our welfare, to kill ecoli and other harmful critters, hey, it's FDA and USDA approved, it's all good, they know best, we're just, well, people and they are corporate America here to guide us in what is truly safe. Thank goodness!

That doesn't even get into the horror of the much touted "corn-fed" beef.

The impact of more corn being fed into our beef is even more GMOs into our diet! (not to mention very unhappy uncomfortable unhealthy cattle.)

That got me thinking, why is it that the ground beef we get at the grocery store is red on the outside but when we get home we see it's brown inside that layer? According to kosherorganics.com:

It is a common industry practice to infuse ground beef with carbon monoxide gas, which keeps beef red for weeks after it actually spoils, tricking consumers into buying bad meat.

So how much poison is ok with you in your daily food intake? It's time we make a choice, not based upon alleged "convenience" in our busy lives, but based upon over very lives.

  1. Wow. Makes buying my grass-fed meat seem less expensive! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Here's scary news... The industry used carbon monoxide on fish as well to "ensure natural coloring". Think of all that beautiful Red Tuna at the sushi bar..... Horrifying!

  3. Oh my word. I believe that God intended for us to eat meat, but I'm pretty sure he didn't intend for us to eat it like this! Thank you for helping with this movement...it is so much easier to go against the flow when you have other people who are as passionate about it in the world! Thank you so much for the research you've done here. What is your policy for sharing on other blogs?

  4. Although I was already aware of some of the questionable practices involved in our food production, the movie just awakened me more.

  5. Thank God I happened to come here. The mention of floor cleaner urged the inside of me to puke.
    I'll connect. Tx again.

  6. Hi there!
Great blog, u teach me stuff.
I often make tomato sauce from scratch, and like to think it is healthier. I would be really happy if u would look at how I do it and tell me if there is something I could do to improve it. Here is my recipe: http://thingsidowhenyoulookaway.blogspot.com/2010/01/different-different-but-same-or-better.html

  7. BTW, in Norway it has become illegal to use the gas, so all our meat is brown in the shops now. U actually get used to it, even if it was strange in the beginning :)

  13. That movie changed the way my family buys beef! We no longer buy just regular meet from just anywhere. I have been getting it at Trader Joe's. They have Organic beef for 5.99 for 2 pounds which isn't that bad. The thought of bleached meat make me so sick! People need to get involved with their food and research what they are eating and feeding their children! Would you mind if I link your post on my blog? I loved this!

  15. This is ridiculous if food is injected with such rotten chemical stuff...and children served the same? Therefore there should be horrendous health issues irreparable and unforgivable, who will take the responsibility.Wake up and change the wrong doings.

  18. It is true that there is a lot of contamination in food today. It is best to cook home made and healthy as far as possible. But the busy life and the changing tastes make this a routine to but products. We must buy organic to play safe.

  19. That is exactly why we 'grow' our own meat. We know exactly whats in our beef :-)

  20. We are teaching our kids about organics, non-gmo and natural foods at a very young age (they are just learning to read but can spot the organic labels from a mile away). A relative bought us a book called temple and moo...from amazon i think...VERY fun way to teach kids about organics fyi. Keep up the great work! Great blog!!!

  21. Well, it just isn't the world we thought we were born into, where honest and quality food and products for health are available everywhere. You have to look, scour, research, question it all from every angle to see if who's telling you "it's safe" is speaking with honor or integrity. What's that? I know one great place to find quality-oriented, purity based, and hand-crafted organic goods of all kinds...

  22. Great info to share with the masses, if only more people will know about the importance in our food supply and how it relates to virtually everything that has to do with our health and well being. After I watched this video, I've started to eat nothing but organics , and its amazing how by simply changing what you eat will make a huge difference in my life.

  24. CORN? Perfect food for Cattle? NOT! Cows eat grass not grains. btw, the first video is down. I suggest green-fed beef if you are going to eat beef.

  25. You know, a long time ago I read about this too on a very comprehensive fitness guide. I discovered that unlike what vegetarians and vegans say, we humans ARE meant to eat meat, but not grain-fed meat from animals that are treated on such horrible and anti-natural conditions. It's a shame... all because it makes A-LOT-O-PROFITZZZ :(

I bet they would make more money if they just did things the right way, don't you think? xD

Anyways, great post. Really, thanks for sharing the "organic revolution"! :D

  27. I always wonder about the people at the head of these corporations, how their minds work. They know what they are producing isn't healthy, the livestock are treated inhumanely and yet they seem to have no conscience. I've driven past a few factory farms and you can smell them miles away - no grass, no room for the cows, just all packed in together. Makes me want to cry.

  30. The even scarier news is that the industry is starting to find subterfuges for organic products as well. As long as the regulations can be exploited for maximum profit, why wouldn't they?

  32. I'm in Australia and I didn't think as much of beef was gain fed as it actually is. I started boycotting supermarkets and buying from a little organic shop and local farm. But because the farm is some distance away and only get a chance to go there every other week when I'm in the area I started going to some local butchers to try and source grass fed beef. I didn't think this would be as great a challenge as it actually was. I couldn't find 1! I thought surly with this great vast land I live on there would be plenty of space for cattle to graze....but no economies of scale dictate that housing cattle in a tiny yard and only feeding them gain is the most profitable way to produce! I read a book by Michael Pollan and through some of his research and then some of my own discovered that these cattle that are fed grains cannot survive. They are slaughtered at 8 months old but if there were kept alive any longer they would die on a grain fed diet. They were created to graze, and to chew cud and they simply cannot do this with grain. There was also some research that suggests that the omega 3 and 6 balance is so out of whack and that this could be causing the crazy rise in high cholesterol and high blood pressure (among many other bad dietary choices I'm sure) So off to the farm I go, I can see the cattle grazing. I buy in bulk and have reduced the amount of meat we eat!

  33. As a country, we really need to move back to organic grass-fed farming. The obesity in our country can be traced back to processed foods, additives and other unnatural substances in all of our foods, including beef, vegetables and fruits (think pesticides/insecticides. Something to be aware of is organic foods grown outside the US are doused in pesticides before being allowed to enter the country.

  34. Thanks for sharing this info! That's a bad news especially for those who have high allergic reactions to pesticides or any chemicals but keep on buying on the market who just keep on saying their products organic... and for that reason,

We are asking for help…. We’ve developed a tasty organic drink, which is refreshingly organic. We wanted to not only create a new product, but a new lifestyle. We concluded it’s time to “rethink” vitamins. 100% Natural we combined mangosteen, acai, pomegranate, banana, pear with baobab. We gave it the name “VitaV”.
